About the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

About CMAP
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) was created to help the northeastern Illinois region address land use and transportation challenges. We serve 284 municipalities from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
CMAP works with numerous partners to implement ON TO 2050, a long-range plan to help northeastern Illinois address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues.
On behalf of the region, CMAP is leading the development of The Century Plan. This initiative invites voices across government, civic spheres, business, and communities to prioritize what the region will need to thrive by midcentury. The Century Plan will serve as our north star and define what we must do together, why it matters to the region and provide policy guidance on how we get there.
Throughout 2026 and 2027, CMAP is bringing together regional decision-makers and action-takers from government, civic, business, and community organizations to think big about the challenges and opportunities facing northeastern Illinois. Together, we’ll set a path for systems that support transportation, the economy, and the environment — with priorities defined by the region, for the region. The journey is just beginning, and we invite you to join the conversation!
