Comprehensive Climate Action Plan for Greater Chicago

Greater ChicagoThe comprehensive climate action plan will identify key actions needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from all major sources and align the greater Chicago region with national net-zero emissions goals by 2050. This is a national goal to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

This plan covers 13 counties and 3 states in Greater Chicago. It will build on previous climate action plans from across the region, creating a coordinated strategy to equitably reduce emissions and address climate impacts in low-income and disadvantaged communities.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) are creating this plan together. This work is supported, in part, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program and will be completed by December 2025.

Outreach and engagement

Achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions will require action across all sectors of the economy. Developing a plan to coordinate this work will similarly require collaboration among policy makers, implementers, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

The project team has convened five distinct groups to guide and inform the development of the plan:
