FLIP 2021 has ended.
There’s no way around it — racism has influenced planning decisions in the past and continues to have pervasive effects on our society today. Can we use planning to create a more equitable future for our region?
We will kick off our first session with a welcome from CMAP’s executive director, Erin Aleman, and learn more about CMAP's work in the region. Then, we will provide an overview of the FLIP program and what to expect in the next four weeks. This session will focus on basic principles of urban planning, including how planning in the past has affected communities throughout our region. Finally, we will hear from Tonika Johnson, creator of the Folded Map project, and explore the differences in the built environment between Chicago’s North and South sides.
Before class
Take a look at our pre-session content below to familiarize yourself with resources that will form the foundation for this week’s lesson.
During class
Join us on July 9, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., for class.

Look at a map on google street view and pick a twin – somewhere in a different part of the region.
Use Google Streetview to click around.
Look for main streets & what kind of businesses they have
Look at the homes on the side streets
Are there many trees? Are there empty lots or is everything all occupied? Big buildings or small ones? Who do they see on the street? Are there homes, schools, hospitals? Do you see trash cans? Do you see bike lanes?
