Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is working with stakeholders to study potential improvements at the Laraway Road at-grade crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad and the accompanying highway section from Brandon Road to IL Route 53 in the City of Joliet.

Using technical information and public engagement, the study will identify a range of solutions to address traffic congestion at Laraway Road. These alternatives may include a grade separation, such as a highway bridge over the railroad, or other options. The alternatives will then be screened for criteria such as cost, safety, congestion, and pollution benefits to arrive at a short list of screened alternatives to carry forward for further study.

To complete the study, CMAP is engaging in a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) process. Through this process, the Purpose and Need and the results of the alternatives screening can be carried forward into the engineering phase, saving time and effort during that phase of project development.

While the project study limits are Brandon Road to IL Route 53, including the grade crossing, please let us know about any location relevant to this study, even if it's outside the study limits.  An example would be a truck-trip generator that requires trucks to travel over the grade crossing.

Thank you!
