The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is partnering with Pace Suburban Bus, Harper College, the Townships of Hanover,Palatine and Schaumburg, and the Villages of Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg to conduct a transit coordination study in northwest Cook County. The Northwest Cook Transit Coordination Study's goal is to develop recommendations for more effective, efficient and coordinated transit services in the project area.
As part of the study, the project team is:
Evaluating how transit agencies can maintain and improve existing, high-quality services;
Investigating how all types of commuters can access affordable and accessible transportation;
Exploring alternate transit funding sources; and
Discovering opportunities for new strategic partnerships.
The study began in summer 2023 and will continue through the end of 2024.

Northwest Cook Transit Coordination Study is currently at this stage
As of early 2024, the project team is analyzing existing transit conditions in northwest Cook County. This analysis looks into current transit services provided by the following agencies: Barrington Township; Hanover Township; Palatine Township; Schaumburg Township; the Village of Hoffman Estates; the Village of Schaumburg; Harper College; and Pace Suburban Bus. Specifically, the team will review each service's current fare structure, ridership eligibility requirements, policies and procedures, and more.
Market Analysis

The project team will create a report that provides an overview of transit service demand within the study area. As examples, the report may include information about the types of trips riders make, travel patterns, or areas in need of additional transit options.
Key Recommendations

Using information gathered through the existing conditions and market analyses, the project team will work closely with project partners to create initial improvement recommendations that will be used throughout the remainder of the study. These key recommendations may include preliminary suggestions on how to improve accessibility, expand service hours and/or locations, reduce fares, and more. The recommendations developed during this stage will be expanded upon during the study's following stages.
Business Plan

The project team will create a comprehensive plan that builds upon the key recommendations developed in the previous stage. This plan will provide implementation strategies for the project partners that can help each agency better coordinate their specialized transit services. Implementation strategies may include recommendations on how to improve service consistency, reduce costs, or eliminate barriers that prevent riders from using their service.
Draft Coordination Study Report

The project team will take all of the information gathered during the previous project stages to create a draft coordination study document. This report will describe all of the activities completed throughout the project, survey results, key action items, maps, and more. The document will be reviewed by CMAP, project partners, stakeholders, and the public.
