Welcome to the project website for the west cook bicycle and pedestrian plan. Our goal is to create a plan for safe, accessible, and comfortable walking, bicycling, and rolling in Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, and Westchester that focuses on connecting people of all ages and abilities to their important destinations.

Meet our west cook communities: Berkeley, Bellwood, Hillside, Broadview, and Westchester

What is this plan?

The Villages of Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, and Westchester have partnered with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to develop the West Cook Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The partnership between the five communities will help create a complete and connected network of bikeways and sidewalks that will allow residents to access key destinations throughout the West Cook region.

Through data collection and analysis and community involvement, the West Cook Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan will:

Why does the plan foucs on walking, bicycling, and rolling?

It is important that our communities have streets that are safe, comfortable, and accessible for all users, including people who travel by foot, mobility device, scooter, or bike. These modes of traveling have economic, environmental, social, and health benefits – plus, they can be fun ways to get around!

By making our streets friendly for people walking, bicycling, and rolling, Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside, and Westchester community members will have safer and more comfortable opportunities to walk, bike, or roll to schools, jobs, parks, community centers, local businesses, and to their family and friends in the West Cook region.

Disadvantaged populations, both in the Chicago region and nationally, are more likely to be affected by traffic violence. This plan will make a particular effort to engage underrepresented groups and to make the five communities safer for children, seniors, and other vulnerable road users.

You can share your input or experiences at in-person project events and through online activities. During the planning process, the project team will organize events and activities to engage with and listen to residents, local organizations, and other stakeholders in the five West Cook communities. Currently, we have three engagement activities on this project website. Click on the following icons or scroll below!

  • This survey is part of the West Cook Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan project currently being undertaken jointly by Bellwood, Berkeley, Broadview, Hillside and Westchester. The project will develop a plan to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety in the five communities.

We want to hear from the people who know the neighborhoods best: you – the people who live and work there! The following survey should take less than ten minutes to complete and will help us identify areas and intersections to focus on.

Participation is voluntary and entirely anonymous. If you have any questions about the survey or about the project, please contact franny.ritchie@samschwartz.com.
